Jewish Family Names from Germany

Mr. Feuchtwanger was born and lived in a small town in southern Germany named "Feuchtwangen". After his emigration he kept his name until today.

The result is that in today more people are named by the location of their family origin than citizens living today in, for instance, Feuchtwangen. This name preservation is a traditional Jewish life style. The same is to be said for the Erlanger and Ansbacher and more than 30 other common surnames. We may be reminded of the Book of Exodus where it is described that the Biblical Jews kept their Jewish names and dress style in Egypt.

In the last decades surnames were changed to get a more Hebrew, Israeli sound. So "Bamberger" changed their family name to "Bar-Giora" and "Oppenheimer" became "Ofen". Anyway, the number of descendants of former Ansbacher amounts to some thousand people in Israel, the United States, England and all the other destinations of the Emigration of former German Jews.

Our aim is to collect data for exact statistics about Jewish surnames and the use of German town names. All information provided will be kept in strict confidence.
